An event that could have been a major turning point has been put off, as previously planned peace negotiations between the Congolese government and the M23 rebel group, which were set to take place this Wednesday in Doha, have now been delayed. This would have been the first direct discussion since M23 fighters took over the two largest cities in eastern Congo, Goma and Bukavu. This rapid advance has resulted in the deaths of thousands, displacement of hundreds of thousands more, and heightened concerns about a broader regional conflict.
