Opposition groups in Turkey are mobilizing large-scale demonstrations in Istanbul as a response to the arrest of Ekrem Imamoglu, the former mayor of the city.

Around 2000 individuals have been detained in Turkey due to the ongoing crackdown on opposition to the government. This crackdown began after the apprehension of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu on the 19th of March. It appears that a significant number of those who have been detained are students. Erdogan, the ruler of the country, defended the use of power by the police, declaring on Friday that Turkey ‘cannot lose a single young person to our nation’s adversaries’. Regardless of the increasingly fearsome atmosphere, the protests carry on. For further information, refer to Eliza Herbert’s report.
