Talks regarding the future of TikTok, led by the White House, are leaning towards a plan that would involve expanding investment by the major non-Chinese investors of parent company ByteDance, in order to acquire US operations for the short video app. In this proposal, software company Oracle would be responsible for housing data related to US users, while ByteDance would maintain control over the app. Jonathan Penney, an associate professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, stated that this plan would be “in violation of the requirements of the law.”
