SADC Concludes Military Deployment in Democratic Republic of Congo


Southern African countries have decided to withdraw their peacekeeping forces from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). These troops were initially deployed to assist Kinshasa in curbing the activities of the M23 rebels, however, despite their efforts, the rebels successfully captured several eastern towns in a rapid and unexpected campaign this year. Angola has announced that direct peace negotiations are expected to commence in the near future.
