On Sunday, Saudi Arabia began observing the Eid al-Fitr festivities globally, commemorating the conclusion of the month of Ramadan. Muslims in Europe, as well as in certain Gulf Arab countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, have joined in the celebrations; however, countries like Iran will hold their observances on Monday. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres extended his greetings to the Muslim community for the joyous occasion, but did so with a sense of deep concern, as many Muslims are unable to share Eid with their families due to the hardships of war, conflict, or displacement.
