The Brazilian Ministry of Human Rights has reported an alarming rise in cases of religious-based prejudices and assaults in 2024, with a nearly 70 percent escalation from the previous year. The brunt of this upsurge is being borne by adherents of religions with African origins, including Umbanda and Candomblé. These practitioners face threats to their safety, with their places of worship often falling victim to destruction and theft. The animosity is largely propelled by segments of evangelical Christianity, notably Pentecostal and Neo-Pentecostal churches, whose following has ballooned significantly within the country in the past several years. This report was compiled by Jan Onoszko and Louise Raulais.
