According to Marc Lavergne, a researcher at France’s national center for Scientific research, the Sudanese army’s recent achievements in Khartoum are primarily “symbolic”. He believes that the developments may “indicate a return to the rule of Omar al-Bashir”. It remains uncertain whether the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces will go back to their base in Dafur to “prolong the conflict”.
