Ahmed al-Sharaa, the interim president of Syria, urged for peace on Sunday amid intensifying communal violence between the predominantly Sunni Muslim population and the Alawite community, who are believed to support the ousted regime of Bashar al-Assad. According to a UK-based war monitor, the violence has resulted in the deaths of over 700 Alawite civilians since it erupted on Thursday.
