The filmmaker behind a highly contentious movie, which has been accused of criticizing the Russian government, discussed with FRANCE 24 the remarkable success of his film and the threats it has incurred as a result. “The Master and Margarita” was produced before Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, yet upon its release after the invasion, it assumed a new significance and has now become one of the highest-grossing films in Russia.
