The Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) approved a counterproposal by the Arab League in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s contentious plan to forcefully relocate Gazans from the Gaza Strip. The decision was made during an emergency meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, just days after the Arab League initially endorsed the plan at a summit in Cairo. However, the counterproposal may largely be symbolic due to Israel and the United States rejecting it, despite Hamas not having a role in it. The U.S. State Department stated that the proposal failed to fulfill Washington’s expectations, but the U.S. Middle East envoy regarded it as a “good faith first step” from Egypt. Morgan Ayre provides additional information.
