U.S. Considering Removal of “Terrorist” Label for Al Qaeda-Affiliated HTS in Syria

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a Syrian group previously associated with al Qaeda, had its status as a “foreign terrorist organization” withdrawn by the United States last Monday. This decision was made a week after the US lifted its long-standing sanctions against the country. The current interim President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, was in charge of HTS when they overthrew the government of former President Bashar al-Assad in December.
