Uganda’s vibrant film production hub, Wakaliwood, is defying norms in the heart of Kampala’s slums with its high-octane film studio.

In the impoverished areas of Wakaliga, located on the outskirts of Uganda’s capital Kampala, there has been a small film studio defying traditional norms for the past two decades. Despite operating on limited budgets, Wakaliwood has managed to produce action and martial arts movies that attract millions of Ugandans on YouTube annually. This unconventional film studio fuses intense violence, humor, and homages to Bruce Lee’s iconic films. It gained significant attention in 2010 with the viral sensation “Who Killed Captain Alex?”, which garnered 10 million views. After years of facing financial challenges, the much-anticipated sequel to this film is finally set to be released, promising to rekindle enthusiasm for this one-of-a-kind cinematic experience. FRANCE 24’s Clément Di Roma brings you this report.
