Sexual violence has emerged as a tool of warfare in an ongoing conflict, as the United Nations children’s agency investigates a disturbing number of rape cases against young children. The victims, many of whom are under the age of five, have suffered severe sexual abuse at the hands of armed individuals in Sudan’s civil war.

The atrocities have been attributed to both the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitaries, further intensifying the brutality of a war that has already taken tens of thousands of lives since its onset in April.
