The United States has levied sanctions on an armed group operating in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), due to their alleged involvement in the illicit mineral trade. Scores of Congolese as well as Chinese businesses suspected to be complicit in this trafficking have also been hit with this punitive measure. This move is part of the US government’s broader aim to put an end to the enduring strife in the region, which is home to an abundance of minerals. It also signals Washington’s desire to stimulate investments from American firms in the DRC.
