President Trump’s social media threat to impose a 200 percent tariff on European wine has resulted in the immediate halt of shipments of many Brunellos, Chiantis, and Proseccos to the US. Thousands of bottles meant for American tables are now stored in Italian wineries and port city warehouses. The damage to Italian wineries is already evident, with many shipments to the US halted due to the potential unaffordable and unbearable tariffs. Italy, along with France and Spain, is one of the most vulnerable countries in Europe to these tariffs, with the US being Italy’s largest wine export market for nearly 15 years. Tuscany, known for Chianti and Brunello wines, has a tight relationship with the US, with Italian wine shops posting signs offering free shipping to the US. Many American wine lovers visit the region, enjoying its vineyards and wines. American importers have also begun to pause orders fearing the potential tariffs. A 200 percent tariff would raise the price of a $20 bottle to $60.
