As the US and China take steps to reduce their trade war, Beijing remains prepared for a broader rivalry with Washington, which means it is unlikely to soften its stance on regional territorial claims and military competition. While both sides have agreed to temporarily reduce high tariffs imposed on each other, this truce will not address other grievances Beijing has with Washington, such as the Pentagon’s plan to shift military forces to Asia and efforts to limit China’s access to advanced technology.
