Commander of Vessel Involved in North Sea Collision Identified as Russian by Shipping Firm

The captain of a container ship involved in a collision with an oil tanker carrying fuel for the U.S. military on Monday is a Russian citizen, according to the company that owns the ship. The man was arrested in northern England on Tuesday on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. One crew member is missing and presumed dead after the crash, which led to explosions and a fire on both vessels. There is no indication that the captain’s nationality played a role in the crash, and British lawmakers have stated that there is no evidence of foul play. The ship’s owner, Ernst Russ, confirmed that the captain was Russian, while the rest of the crew consisted of Russians and Filipinos. The Stena Immaculate, the tanker involved in the crash, was owned by Crowley, a logistics company, and was chartered by the U.S. government. The crash occurred about 13 nautical miles off the northeastern coast of England, raising questions about the effectiveness of radar and alert systems.
