Demonstrators Gather in Seoul Anticipating Court Decision Regarding South Korea’s Presidential Election

South Korea has deployed over 14,000 police officers around the Constitutional Court ahead of a possible decision that could either remove or reinstate President Yoon Suk Yeol. Police have closed subway stations, restricted areas around a popular tourist spot, and issued orders for schools, vendors, and businesses to close. Protests are expected to be held from 10 a.m. local time, in response to a government that has been dealing with ongoing political turmoil since Mr. Yoon declared martial law in December. After being initially detained on insurrection charges in January, Mr. Yoon was released due to a procedural flaw. Police have created a heavily fortified environment outside the Constitutional Court to prevent clashes between supporters and opponents of Mr. Yoon, and South Korea’s interim leader, Han Duck-soo, called for respect and calm in the face of the decision.
