King Charles III took a helicopter to HMS Prince of Wales in the English Channel on Tuesday, interacting with sailors and observing fighter jets taking off from the Royal Navy aircraft carrier’s deck. It could have been a welcome break for him from his suddenly complex social life. In just five days, Charles had invited President Trump for a second state visit to Britain, and then hosted two of Mr. Trump’s biggest critics, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, at his country estate northeast of London. None of the gestures were overtly political, as is customary in Britain’s constitutional monarchy, but they have still drawn Charles into a diplomatic drama in a way that is unusual for a British sovereign. The invitation to Mr. Trump, delivered with much fanfare by Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday in the Oval Office, has become more contentious since the president had a dispute with Mr. Zelensky over American support for Ukraine.
