A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 hit near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, on Friday. The quake caused significant damage to bridges and buildings across Southeast Asia, resulting in at least 20 deaths in Myanmar and hundreds of injuries. A strong aftershock of 6.4 magnitude followed 11 minutes later. The shaking was felt in southern China, Vietnam, and as far away as Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, where a 30-story skyscraper collapsed, resulting in at least three deaths. Details on casualties and damage in Myanmar, which has been affected by a four-year-long civil war, were not immediately available. In Bangkok, people fled to the streets due to fear of aftershocks, causing traffic to come to a standstill. Videos captured surging water from rooftop pools of hotels and residential towers.
