The closely guarded and carefully choreographed process of electing a pope officially came to a conclusion with the introduction of Pope Leo XIV on Thursday. However, according to Joelle Rollo-Koster, a history professor at the University of Rhode Island, the oath of secrecy is often extended unofficially for a slightly longer period. While the details of what happens when the pope returns to St. Peter’s Basilica can only be imagined, the following days will see a blend of private decisions and public displays.
The Vatican has announced that Pope Leo XIV will hold a Mass with the cardinals who voted for him on Friday in the Sistine Chapel, followed by the recitation of the Regina Coeli at St. Peter’s Basilica on Sunday. The conclusion of the conclave does not signal the end of political maneuvering as cardinals may now openly discuss their reasons for supporting him and their expectations for his leadership. Additionally, the new pope is expected to meet with journalists at the Vatican for the first time on Monday.
Furthermore, Pope Leo XIV will need to make a decision regarding his place of residence. While the majority of popes have chosen to live in the Apostolic Palace, Pope Francis opted for the Vatican guesthouse. The Vatican will likely disclose the new pope’s decision regarding his residence, similar to what happened with Pope Francis’s choice, approximately two weeks after his election.
