Faithful Gather to Pray for Pope Francis’ Health During Sunday Service

Roman Catholics around the world joined in prayer for Pope Francis, who is currently in critical condition and hospitalized, after the Vatican announced that he is still facing danger.

The 88-year-old Pope Francis was admitted to the hospital on February 14th due to an infection that led to pneumonia in both lungs. On Saturday, he experienced a prolonged “asthmatic respiratory crisis” that required extensive oxygen treatment and a blood transfusion, according to the Vatican.

Since 2013, Francis has served as the spiritual leader of almost 1.4 billion Roman Catholics globally, and people everywhere are offering prayers for his recovery.

At the Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul, Pat Santos, a tourist from the Philippines, referred to the Pope as “the symbol of Christianity.”

“Pneumonia is a serious illness, especially at his age, which is why we should be concerned,” stated Mr. Santos, 31, who was touristing in South Korea with his family. “We hope for his quick recovery, so that he can enjoy a peaceful retirement.”

In the past, Francis has suffered lung damage, and recently, some cardinals have discussed the possibility of his resignation, similar to what his predecessor, Benedict XVI, did in 2013.

On Friday, doctors had said that Francis would remain hospitalized at the Policlinico Agostino Gemelli in Rome for at least another week, in a critical condition. However, the announcement on Saturday indicated a more serious situation.

During Sunday Mass at the Manila Cathedral, Father Vicente Gabriel Bautista mentioned, “Once again, we continue to pray for Pope Francis. May the Lord bestow on him love, mercy, and healing.” The cathedral also held a special prayer vigil for Francis on Friday.

Prayers for the Pope were also said during Sunday services in Sydney and Melbourne.
