Gene Hackman, who passed away at the age of 95, was an enduring and recognizable star in Hollywood with a five-decade career, portraying various characters as police officers, villains, and men of the cloth, in thriller, comedy and superhero genres.
In a notable career, Hackman’s accolades included two Academy Awards and four Golden Globes, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award for outstanding contributions to entertainment in 2003.
Hackman’s breakout role was as Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle, a cop investigating a heroin deal in the movie “The French Connection,” for which he won the best actor Academy Award.
His other notable performances include “The Poseidon Adventure” where he played a minister who leads other passengers to safety, “Superman” franchise where he played the arch-villain Lex Luthor, and “Unforgiven” where he played a sadistic small-town sheriff. In Wes Anderson’s comedy, “The Royal Tenenbaums”, he won acclaim as a disbarred lawyer trying to reconcile with his eccentric children.
