Germans Head to the Polls: Key Factors to Monitor Today

Germans will vote on Sunday in a rare snap election that has gained much attention due to the new US administration’s potential tariffs, exclusion of European countries in Ukraine negotiations, and support for an authoritarian Russia. The election, called after the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s unpopular three-party government in November, falls during Europe’s search for strong leadership and recalibration of ties with the United States. Despite efforts to create excitement, polls show a comfortable lead for Friedrich Merz and his conservative Christian Democratic Union. The hard-right Alternative for Germany is expected to place second, riding on voter dissatisfaction and migration concerns. Chancellor Scholz’s Social Democrats are expected to come in third, possibly their worst showing since being banned by the Nazis. The outcome hinges on the number of parties needed to form a government, with the Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats being the most likely partners. The election will determine whether smaller parties surpass the required five percent to enter Parliament. The strength of the far-right AfD, supported by Trump administration officials, could influence German and European politics. The election’s results are expected to be known shortly after polls close, although exit polling may be less accurate this year.
