Grindavik’s Volcano Outbreak Leads to Shutdown of Famous Blue Lagoon

On Tuesday, a volcano in southwestern Iceland began erupting, resulting in the popular Blue Lagoon tourist destination closing and posing a threat to the town of Grindavik, approximately 25 miles southwest of the capital, Reykjavik.

According to the country’s meteorological office, the length of the magma intrusion — approximately seven miles — is the longest reported since November 2023, when residents of Grindavik were instructed to leave.

The eruption commenced at 9:45 a.m., and within 30 minutes, a half-mile-long fissure appeared on the Earth’s surface, as stated by the meteorological office.

By 11 a.m., the first fissure had expanded, and a new one had opened a few hundred yards from the protective barriers near Grindavik.

This is an ongoing story. Stay tuned for updates.
