Hungary announced on Thursday its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), a decision made shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s arrival in the country, despite his active international arrest warrant. Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government had previously stated that it would disregard its obligations under the 1998 treaty that established the court. Rather than arresting Netanyahu upon his arrival in Budapest on Thursday morning, Hungary gave him a warm welcome at Buda Castle with military honors. Gergely Gulyas, Orban’s chief of staff, confirmed in a Facebook post that Hungary will begin the withdrawal process this Thursday, following constitutional and international legal frameworks.
In November, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.
