IDF Directs Gaza City Residents to Leave Their Homes

The Israeli military has instructed residents in several areas of Gaza City to evacuate, as they continue to intensify their attacks on Hamas in the war-afflicted Gaza Strip.

Not long after the Palestinian health officials reported that dozens of people, including children, were killed in Israeli strikes on a school-turned-shelter, the latest evacuation order was issued late Thursday. Israel is investigating the incident.

This evacuation order, which has exacerbated the suffering of Palestinians who had already experienced displacement and poor living conditions during the first 15 months of the war, comes after a two-month-old truce between Israel and Hamas broke down in mid-March due to their inability to agree on an extension.

Since then, the Israeli military has launched a widespread bombing campaign in Gaza, reportedly aimed at compelling Hamas to release more hostages. The military’s Arabic-speaking spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, issued a “final” warning before another attack, urging civilians to move southward and suggesting that militant groups operate amongst them.

Although many Palestinians have heeded evacuation orders during the ongoing Israeli campaign, others have refused to leave, either unable to endure further displacement or lacking an alternative place to go.

The Israeli military stated on Friday that they were investigating reports of an incident in the Tuffah neighborhood of Gaza City. Mr. Adraee called for residents to vacate Tuffah the previous day and this recent order targeted other parts of the city.

The New York Times verified multiple videos on Thursday that demonstrated an explosion and its aftermath at the Dar al-Arqam school, where civilians were taking shelter. The airstrikes were followed by a frantic scene at Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City, where dust-covered and wounded children were hurriedly brought in from vehicles.

According to the Gaza health ministry, the bodies of 27 people killed in the airstrikes arrived at the hospital. The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants when counting casualties.

Among the fatalities was the grandson of Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas’s top negotiator based in Qatar, as reported by Al Aqsa TV channel.

Israel has previously targeted schools serving as shelters, claiming that Hamas operatives operate command centers from them. Hamas has denied these allegations. The United Nations believes that Israeli strikes on schools likely constitute a violation of international law due to the disproportionate harm caused to noncombatants.

As per the Gaza health ministry, over 1,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire ended on Mar. 18, with a total of more than 50,000 deaths since the onset of the war. The conflict began with an attack by Hamas-led forces on Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths.
