If Your Heathrow Flight Was Called Off or Redirected, Here’s What You Should Be Informed About

At least 1,300 flights in and out of London’s Heathrow Airport were disrupted on Friday after the airport, Europe’s busiest, was shut down due to a major nearby fire causing a power outage.

More flights are expected to be canceled or delayed in the coming days as airlines deal with the aftermath of the airport’s closure, impacting air travel on a global scale. According to Flightrader24, 220,000 passengers were originally expected to travel through Heathrow on Friday.

Heathrow stated that it had no choice but to remain closed until 11:59 p.m. on Friday. “We understand this is frustrating for passengers, and we assure them that we are working diligently to resolve this situation,” said an airport spokesperson.

For those whose travels have been affected, here’s the information you need to know.

Passengers scheduled to travel in and out of Heathrow have been advised not to come to the airport, and to get in touch with their airline for additional details.

On Friday, passengers attempting to reach Heathrow were turned away by the police, and vehicles in the vicinity were redirected.

Most major airlines have provided updates on their websites regarding flight disruptions and instructions for rescheduling canceled flights. You can also check their social media channels for updates.

If your flight is departing from a British airport, arriving there on a British or European Union airline, or landing in an EU airport on a British airline, British law applies to you.

Airlines are legally required to offer care and assistance for delays exceeding two hours for short-haul, three hours for medium-haul, and four hours for long-haul flights. The applicable law to your flight can be checked here.

Under the guidelines, airlines must supply a reasonable amount of food and drink, communication means, accommodations for overnight delays, and transportation to and from accommodations or the passenger’s home.

“The airline is obligated to furnish these items until it can transport you to your destination, regardless of the duration or cause of the delay,” states the U.K Civil Aviation Authority on its website.

In situations of significant disruption such as the Heathrow Airport closure, airlines may find themselves understaffed and struggling to meet passenger demands.

In such cases, the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority suggests passengers to cover costs privately and retain receipts for reimbursement requests, ensuring expenses are reasonable. Luxury hotels and alcohol will not be covered by airlines.
