Mrs. Irma González recognized her son Jossel Sánchez’s gray backpack in a photo. She had last seen him take that backpack to his first job three years ago, before he vanished. The photo showed bone fragments and personal belongings found on a ranch in western Mexico. Mrs. González, who had been searching for Jossel and countless others in Mexico, stood 300 feet away from the entrance of the Izaguirre ranch, desperate for answers as to whether her son’s remains were there or had been taken elsewhere. Over 120,000 people have gone missing in Mexico since 1962, according to official records. Local authorities have not yet identified any of the remains found on the ranch or provided many answers to the situation. The site has been linked to the violent Jalisco New Generation Cartel, but the extent of the violence and the whereabouts of the missing people remain uncertain.
