The Israeli military has instructed residents near Beirut to evacuate for the first time since a ceasefire with Hezbollah took effect following a rocket attack on northern Israel. An Israeli military spokesman, Avichay Adraee, marked a specific building in the Hadath neighborhood of Dahiya as the reason for the evacuation, stating that anyone within 300 yards should leave immediately due to the building’s association with Hezbollah. Since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack began the conflict in Gaza, Hezbollah has supported Palestine by firing rockets and drones at Israeli positions, leading to a full-scale war and a ceasefire agreement in November. Despite the ceasefire, Israeli forces have continued to target militant sites in Lebanon, with Dahiya, a traditionally pro-Hezbollah area, being previously untargeted. Air-raid sirens sounded in northern Israel, with one projectile intercepted, and Hezbollah denied involvement and affirmed adherence to the ceasefire. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened retaliatory action on Beirut if the peace is not maintained. The evacuation caused panic among locals, with hospital staff near the marked building confirming they would not evacuate their damaged hospital. Hwaida Saad and Dayana Iwaza reported from Beirut.
