During the early hours of Tuesday, Israeli forces carried out a significant attack on Gaza, marking what seems to be the first major assault in the region since the cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, which started about two months prior.
The Israeli Defense Forces announced via Telegram shortly before 2:30 a.m. that they, alongside the Israeli Security Agency, were “executing extensive strikes against terror targets associated with the Hamas terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip.” They indicated that further information would be shared in due time.
Following the cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hamas in mid-January, the Israeli army has been responsible for a series of minor strikes on Gaza. According to Hamas, these incidents have resulted in more than 150 fatalities, with at least some being civilians. They have accused Israel of breaching the truce by continuing military actions.
Negotiations over the next phases of the cease-fire, which includes a permanent conclusion to the conflict initiated by the Hamas-led assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, have been ongoing. However, mediators, including the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, have yet to make substantial progress due to the deep-seated frustrations between the two parties.
This story is ongoing.
