Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with US President Trump at the White House on Monday, marking his second visit since the new administration took office in January. Mr. Netanyahu’s trip comes after he had recently intensified Israel’s military operations against Hamas in Gaza last month, despite the efforts of Mr. Trump’s team to negotiate a new truce to halt the violence and release more hostages. No comment has been provided by Netanyahu’s spokesperson. Previously, the Israeli prime minister was on a state visit to Hungary, where he met with Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. During Netanyahu’s last visit to the US, Trump outlined a plan for Gaza that would involve American intervention and the mass departure of Palestinians from the area. Netanyahu has since advocated for what he refers to as voluntary emigration of Gazans, a move critics have labeled as forced displacement. Meanwhile, Israeli forces have been continually striking Gaza and pushing further into the area since the conflict resumed in late March. Israel has blocked humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza, which has raised concerns about a deepening humanitarian emergency for the civilian population. The Trump administration supports Israel and faults Hamas for the resurgence in hostilities, with Hamas alleging that Israel is responsible for breaking the cease-fire that American officials had been working to establish.
