Kenyan Police Unit in Haiti to Counter Gangs Faces Fatal Encounter

A tragic incident occurred on Sunday when a Kenya police officer lost their life during an international operation aimed at combating gang violence and restoring order in Haiti. This marks the first death of a Kenyan officer involved in the Multinational Security Support Mission, which has been present in Haiti since June and is primarily composed of Kenyan officers.

The officer was injured during an operation in the Artibonite region, located north of the capital, Port-au-Prince. They were taken to the hospital by air but unfortunately passed away later that day, as stated by the Multinational Security Support Mission in a social media update.

Since June, hundreds of Kenyan police officers have been stationed in Haiti as part of a US-sponsored mission to restore order. In 2022, Haiti’s prime minister had requested foreign armed intervention to address the widespread gang violence that has plagued the nation.

The Multinational Security Support Mission, consisting of officers from Jamaica, the Bahamas, Belize, Guatemala, and El Salvador, aims to reclaim control of Port-au-Prince from the well-armed and organized Haitian gangs that have overrun the capital.

This is a developing story that will be updated.
