Mexican Mayor Linked to Drug Cartel Investigation at Ranch

The mayor of a small Mexican town faces charges of collaborating with one of the country’s most violent drug cartels to run a recruitment and training center. Prosecutors allege that José Asunción Murguía Santiago, the mayor, was involved in organized crime offenses and forced disappearance. The center, located in Jalisco, was exposed in March after volunteers discovered piles of shoes, heaps of clothing, and what appeared to be human bone fragments on an abandoned ranch. The mayor’s arrest underscores the long-standing issue of Mexican officials being linked to organized crime.
