A tragic incident occurred on Monday in Mannheim, a city in southwestern Germany, when a man drove his car into a group of people during lunchtime, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries, according to the police. The driver has been apprehended, and the police are currently investigating whether anyone else might have been involved. Authorities are advising the public to steer clear of the city center due to the incident.
This unfortunate event is reminiscent of several other vehicle-related attacks that have taken place in Germany recently. Just two weeks ago, a 24-year-old Afghan asylee deliberately drove into a union rally in Munich, which resulted in the deaths of a 2-year-old girl and her mother, and dozens of other people injured. Further back in December, a Saudi doctor residing in Germany for over a decade is suspected of driving his car into a Christmas market in Magdeburg, causing six fatalities and hundreds more injuries.
Last year, Mannheim was in the headlines after an Afghan national in Germany attacked individuals at a far-right demonstration, fatally stabbing a police officer who tried to intervene.
