On Saturday, a man went on a stabbing spree in a small city in France, resulting in the death of one person and the injury of several others. President Emmanuel Macron referred to the incident as an “Islamist terrorist attack.” The man targeted a market in Mulhouse, a city located approximately 70 miles south of Strasbourg, near the borders of Germany and Switzerland. As he began his attack, he was heard shouting “Allahu akbar,” an Arabic phrase meaning “God is great” that is commonly used in religious and nonreligious settings. However, it has also been used as a war cry in some terrorist attacks by Islamic fundamentalists. The man killed a civilian who attempted to stop him, and three police officers were also injured in the attack, two of them seriously. The attacker was apprehended at the scene and was on France’s terrorist watch list. Mulhouse’s mayor, Michèle Lutz, expressed her horror at the incident in a post on Facebook.
