Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized in Rome for the past 10 days due to pneumonia, a complex infection, and kidney issues, is currently resting and his condition is being monitored closely, according to the Vatican. While the Vatican stated that “the night went well” and the pope slept, it did not provide any additional information regarding his health. An update on his condition is expected later in the day, following reports of “initial, mild kidney failure” on the previous day. At present, the Vatican has stated that his kidney issues are “under control” and there have been no instances of an “asthmatic respiratory crisis” similar to the one he experienced on Saturday. The Vatican also mentioned that the pope is “alert and well-oriented” and that his anemia has improved with blood transfusions. While the 88-year-old pontiff still requires high flows of supplemental oxygen, this hospitalization is his longest stay for a lung infection. Dr. Sergio Alfieri, a member of the pope’s medical team, stated on Friday that the pope has acknowledged his own vulnerability and that “both doors are open.” Many around the globe have gathered to pray for the pope’s recovery, demonstrating their support and solidarity.
