Pope Francis Sleeps Well Despite Being Seriously Ill

Pope Francis experienced a peaceful night at the Rome hospital where he has been in critical condition as he receives treatment for pneumonia and a complex infection, the Vatican announced on Sunday morning.

While the Vatican only released a brief statement — “The night passed quietly, the Pope rested” — concerns continue to escalate globally regarding the health of the 88-year-old Pope.

On Saturday, the Vatican informed the public that Francis had a prolonged “asthmatic respiratory crisis” earlier in the day that necessitated “high flows of oxygen.” He also underwent a blood transfusion and remained alert, according to the Vatican, which is providing updates in collaboration with the hospital’s medical staff and the Pope’s doctor at the Vatican.

Francis was admitted to the Policlinico Agostino Gemelli on February 14th with a complicated respiratory tract infection that evolved into pneumonia affecting both lungs. Medical professionals have emphasized the complexity of adjusting his treatment due to his age and pre-existing lung conditions.

In a Friday press briefing, physicians for the first time characterized Francis’s condition as critical, noting that his status could fluctuate daily. Dr. Sergio Alfieri, a surgeon on Francis’s medical team, mentioned that the Pope was aware of his vulnerability and has stated that “both doors are open.”

For several days, prayer vigils have been organised worldwide. Cardinal Baldassare Reina, the Vicar General of the Diocese of Rome, will hold a Mass to pray for the Pope’s recovery at the Basilica of St. John the Lateran on Sunday afternoon.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on Saturday that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the Pope’s health. “We’re praying for the pope,” she said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with him.”
