Russia Marks Ukraine War Anniversary with Minimal Public Discourse

No public events or speeches marking the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Three years after sending troops to Ukraine, Russian officials are marking the anniversary with silence.

President Vladimir V. Putin will not attend any events on Monday for the anniversary of the invasion which has become Europe’s biggest military conflict since World War II.

Russian state TV began Monday morning news bulletins with routine reports from Ukraine, without mentioning the significance of the date.

Local officials who typically glorify the invasion were quiet on Monday.

No public mournings on Monday for Russia’s casualties, estimated by U.S. intelligence to be in the hundreds of thousands.

Independent Russian journalists published a report claiming over 165,000 Russian soldiers lost since the conflict began, but Russia’s defense ministry does not disclose casualty figures.

A top Russian diplomat praised the Trump administration’s efforts to end the war, suggesting a cease-fire without a settlement could lead to renewed conflict at a later date.

The diplomat emphasized the need for a long-term settlement to address the underlying reasons for the conflict in Ukraine.
