The Continent Braces for Moscow’s Squeeze as the US Under Trump Reduces Its Support

European leaders are currently working to address a potential void in Ukraine and in continental security, as President Trump’s White House is considering a reduction in American support and troop numbers in Europe. As the war in Ukraine marks its third anniversary, with the threat of a strengthened Russia, top European officials will be showing their support in Kyiv today. EU foreign ministers will also be meeting in Brussels to discuss their next support package for Ukraine, which could total over €20 billion, as well as a new sanctions package against Russia, which might not please the White House given Trump’s closer ties with Russia. Additionally, European leaders are contemplating deploying troops on the ground in Ukraine and increasing military spending more broadly. The European Commission is set to propose a blueprint for European defense in mid-March. The withdrawal of American support has heightened concerns among European countries about their vulnerabilities to Russia, leading to a greater push for Europe to take responsibility for its self-defense.
