The Korean War’s Martial Law: Deconstruction of the President’s Strategy’s Rise and Fall

South Korea’s Martial Law Attempt

On the night of Dec. 3, President Yoon Suk Yeol stunned South Koreans by declaring martial law on television, which reawakened dark memories of military rule.
Military helicopters landed inside the National Assembly compound and troops moved to take control of the opposition-controlled parliamentary body. Clashes occurred as Mr. Yoon seemed to disable the Assembly, but he misjudged the public’s resistance and the commitment of his military enforcers. His martial law lasted only six hours before he backed down amid strong protests and resistance from citizens and lawmakers.
It’s unclear how South Korea — often hailed for its vibrant democracy — reached a night where the rule of law came under such drastic threat, the first time since the 1980s.
