Trump’s Strategy Regarding Greenland May Be Failing

For over 150 years, U.S. officials have consistently expressed interest in “getting” Greenland, as President Trump has mentioned. The idea first emerged in the 1860s and resurfaced before and after the World Wars. The current timing is seen as opportune amidst Greenland’s reevaluation of its colonial past under Denmark and growing desires for independence. However, President Trump’s approach seems to have backfired with his uninvited high-profile U.S. delegation visit to the island. This move, coupled with his statements about “getting” Greenland, is driving Greenland further away. The Greenlandic government has responded by openly criticizing Trump’s aggressive tactics and seeking support from Europe, which may strengthen ties with Denmark. Political analysts suggest that Greenland will likely seek comfort in its current relationship with Denmark and its alliances. Even the organizers of a prominent dogsled race indicated a cool response to the visit, stating that although the event is open to the public, they did not invite the visitors. The idea of acquiring Greenland is not new; previous American officials, such as Secretary of State William Seward in 1868, have also considered it due to the island’s geopolitical significance. However, Denmark has consistently refused to part with Greenland. Recent changes include Denmark granting Greenland self-rule in 2009 and a growing independence movement. Despite this, the timing of the visit is seen as insensitive, given the current negotiations for Greenland’s next administration following recent elections. Some Greenlanders, like Jørgen Boassen, support more cooperation with the U.S. and view the visit positively, emphasizing the importance of trade and defense partnerships.
