Despite facing criticism and a decline in popularity, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has seen a recent surge in approval ratings thanks to the support of former US President Donald Trump. While Trump has made statements undermining Zelensky’s leadership and demanding new elections in Ukraine, these actions have unexpectedly helped boost Zelensky’s standing at home. Political opponents, who had previously seen an opportunity to win against Zelensky, have now publicly stated that now is not the time for elections. Suggestions for Zelensky to form a coalition government have not gained significant traction. Although critics have not outright attacked Zelensky, some US-Ukraine negotiations remain precarious. Zelensky has offered to step down in exchange for peace or Ukraine’s membership in NATO, but political opponents have agreed that elections cannot be held while the country is at war. They are likely to push for elections if a cease-fire is reached. Meanwhile, opposition politicians seem to be biding their time despite public calls for unity.
