With Greenland thrust into the spotlight by President Trump, its parliamentary election took on unusual importance. Voter turnout was at its highest in 12 years with nearly 74% of eligible voters casting a ballot. Demokraatit, which has taken a moderate stance on independence from Denmark, won the election with nearly 30% of the vote, ahead of Naleraq, a party that has pushed for quicker independence.
Despite the strong opposition to Mr. Trump’s rhetoric, Greenland has been clear it does not want to be absorbed by the United States with at least 85% of people opposing it. However, Naleraq’s second-place finish means that pro-independence voices will remain influential, and the party could push for greater engagement with Washington in the coming legislature.
