Traffic came to a standstill at one of France’s busiest train stations on Friday due to the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb north of Paris. The authorities halted high-speed and commuter railways in the Saint-Denis suburb, near the Gare du Nord transit hub, as mine-sweeping crews were sent in to clear the bomb. Eurostar trains, which connect France with Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands, were also disrupted, leaving travelers stranded at the station, which served over 226 million travelers in 2023. France’s national railway company stated that trains to and from Gare du Nord would be halted until mid-afternoon at the request of the police. The type and circumstances of the bomb’s discovery remain unclear. France’s transportation minister, Philippe Tabarot, told Sud Radio that authorities were taking necessary precautions to safely remove the bomb and expected train traffic to remain disrupted throughout the day.
