Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Saturday that visas for all South Sudan passport holders would be revoked. This decision was made due to South Sudan’s transitional government’s failure to accept citizens being deported by the Trump administration in a timely manner. In a social media post, Mr. Rubio stated that he would prevent further issuance of visas to South Sudanese individuals, blaming the transitional government for not accepting repatriations. He also mentioned that these actions would be reviewed once South Sudan fully cooperates. This decision aligns with President Trump’s previous threats towards Colombian officials and shows the administration’s focus on quickly deporting foreign citizens. Several detainees, including campus protestors and essay writers against Israel’s war in Gaza, have filed lawsuits and received temporary restraining orders. The Trump administration has been conducting mass deportation campaigns across the United States, with Mr. Rubio revoking potentially 300 or more visas. Visa sanctions were previously imposed on uncooperative countries during the first Trump administration, and in 2023, the Biden administration provided protection from deportation to South Sudanese migrants.
