Australian Radio Host Marty Sheargold Removed from Air Following Controversial Remarks on Women’s Football | Global Headlines

An Australian radio host has been taken off the air after his comments about the country’s women’s football team. During his drive time Triple M radio show, Marty Sheargold compared the Matildas players to “year 10 girls” with various interpersonal issues. He also mentioned he would rather suffer physical harm than watch the team in the upcoming Asian Cup.

The Triple M network condemned the comments, stating they do not align with their values. Mr. Sheargold apologized for his remarks, acknowledging they could be considered offenses. The network plans to introduce a new drive show in response.

The radio host’s remarks have been criticized by the Matildas players, with one saying she is “sick” of such commentary, and another emphasizing that sport is for everyone and these views are for no one. Football Federation Australia also denounced the comments for diminishing the achievements of the women’s national football team and for failing to recognize the team’s impact on Australian sport and society.

Australia’s Minister for Sports called the comments “boorish, boring, wrong,” and the national players’ union stated it is essential that such ignorance is addressed. The Matildas are scheduled to compete in the SheBelieves Cup the following day.

Sky News has reached out to both SCA and Triple M for further comments.
