British couple Peter Reynolds, 79, and his wife Barbie, 75, have been detained in a high-security prison in Afghanistan for several weeks without any accusations or charges, their son, Jonathan, has told Sky News.
Although the couple has lived in Afghanistan for the past 18 years, running an organization called Rebuild that offers education and training programs, they were detained by the Taliban’s interior ministry on February 1 and subsequently moved to a maximum-security prison in Kabul.
Speaking from Chicago, Jonathan expressed concern for his parents’ well-being and stated that the Taliban’s motives for their detention remain unclear.
Their imprisonment has also highlighted the challenges faced in the Afghan prison system, such as limited food and payment requirements for sustenance.
The son also praised the Qatari government’s assistance, which has provided the couple with medicine and financial support.
Despite questions about their safety and the mysterious circumstances surrounding their detention, the Reynolds family remains hopeful for their parents’ release.
