In recent months, China has executed four individuals who are Canadian citizens, according to Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Melanie Joly. She stated that both herself and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pleaded for leniency regarding the dual nationals accused of drug-related offenses.
The Chinese embassy in Ottawa claimed the executions were due to drug crimes and highlighted that China does not recognize dual citizenship. Ms. Joly responded by stating, “We strongly condemn the executions. I personally requested leniency … They were all dual citizens.”
A spokesperson from the Chinese embassy commented, “China imposes severe penalties on drug-related crimes. The facts regarding the crimes of the Canadian nationals are clear, with evidence being solid and sufficient.”
China is believed to execute more individuals annually than the rest of the world combined; however, the exact number remains a state secret. Executions are traditionally carried out by firing squad but have recently included lethal injections.
Ms. Joly noted that Canada consistently seeks clemency for its citizens facing death penalties abroad. She added the families of those executed requested their identities be withheld.

Canada continues to petition for clemency for Robert Schellenberg, sentenced to death for drug smuggling. Amnesty International condemns the executions, calling them a sign that China shows no interest in improving its relationship with Canada.
This news follows China’s imposition of tariffs on Canadian agricultural and food imports in response to Canadian tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products in October.
Commenting on the scenario, Ian Brodie, former chief of staff to ex-Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, remarked that agricultural tariffs were “not the worst part of the PRC’s response to EV tariffs.” Opposition Conservative politician Michael Chong stated that the swift execution of Canadians is unprecedented, signaling Beijing’s lack of intention to improve relations with Canada.
