Construction Site Disaster in Thailand Leads to Multiple Fatalities; Collapsing Road Claims At Least Five Lives

A road under construction in Bangkok has caved in, resulting in the deaths of at least five individuals, according to officials. The accident happened during the early hours of Saturday in the southwest region of the Thai capital. Additionally, 24 individuals were injured at the construction location, stated transport minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit. Fortunately, no road users were impacted because nearby traffic lanes had been closed at the time. Mr. Jungrungreangkit further revealed that the deceased consisted of four workers and an engineer. He offered his condolences and mentioned that the victims would receive compensation from contractors and relevant agencies.

Bangkok police chief Siam Boonsom stated that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collapse, and legal action will be taken against those accountable. Construction on the three-mile elevated road began in 2022, according to information from the Expressway Authority of Thailand website. Surachet Laophulsuk, the governor of the agency, explained that efforts are being made to clear the debris as soon as possible, but warned that it might take up to a week. The contractors involved in the project have been suspended for 14 days pending the investigation. The collapsed site was part of a major road connecting Bangkok to Thailand’s south.

Despite this tragedy, the larger project has faced criticism due to its extended construction timeline and recurrent fatal incidents.
